Based on a recent trip to Hawaii, this painting, “The Tropics” hopes to bring some colour and light into the grand design. This is the first in a series of paintings of the tropics. Here are some artist I mentally checked in with while painting: Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, John Singer Sargent’s watercolours of Florida, Mark Rothko as a reminder for future work, Josef Albers ideas around “Interaction of Color” and my attempt in trying to disprove Aldous Huxley theory of “On the absence of Painters in the Tropics”

Wow ! I like the radical change in style Liza. It would have been very interesting to see the work in progress. How many layers make up the final painting ?
Thank you. Have a look at the short video The Tropics, work in progress, I posted on Tuition Post. Hopefully it will give you some ideas around how to approach a painting. It was really important to use the luminous white ground of the canvas to enable the pure pigments to vibrate. Strangely enough, some of my favorite colors, I use frequently, yellow ochre, raw umber, cerulean blue was simply too matt and subdued for this painting. The use of pure and transparent colors was key.
